When he sits down to write a book, Steven starts with writing down the story outline, setting up the characters and the plot, and then doing research, until he has a rough synopsis. He inserted him into a black training operation, where the operatives are taught the security and training that the operatives need to take on dangerous missions on their own. For his research, he not only learned a lot about pandemics in general, but he also brought forward his own experiences as a former naval officer (in fleshing out the character of Alex Fletcher), and also as a pharmaceutical representative.įor his Black Flagged series, Steven Konkoly had an idea for fleshing out a highly trained, field experienced covert operative, whom he gave the name Daniel Petrovich. In 2013, he achieved his dream of earning a full-time income from his writing. During his drive, while daydreaming, he started to put together the skeleton of a story, which he eventually fleshed out to a full-fledged novel.ĭuring this process of creating his first book, Steven Konkoly realized that writing is what he was meant and wanted to do full time, so he kept going. Unlike many other authors who wanted to become one from early on, Steven Konkoly didn’t intend to write until later in life, when he started writing in 2007 his first novel, The Jakarta Pandemic, while working as a pharmaceutical sales rep after retiring from the army.

Next, he boarded a ship in Japan serving as a junior officer. He started with the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training in Coronado, where he got injured (leg fractured) from which he has never really healed.

He remained in the Navy for the next eight years, serving in active duty. Naval Academy in Annapolis, from where he graduated in 1993 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in English Literature. Authors like Stephen King, Robert Harris, John Grisham, Tom Clancy, and Larry Bond were authors the author has been reading ever since. He got interested in reading books early in life due to his mom who loved reading books as well.

Steven Konkoly was born to two teacher parents in Munster, northwest Indiana, where he also grew up.
